Resting on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, Chagford is a thriving market town, brimming with a fascinating history and a buzzing atmosphere. The town is nestled between dramatic moorland and woodland, making it a true hidden gem.
Dating back thousands of years, Chagford is thought to have been established in the Saxon times with its name translating to ‘the ford where the gorse grows’. In the 1300s Chagford was declared a stannary town, one of just four in Devon, where miners bought their tin for weighing and valuing. Today, Chagford is a growing town, known for its arts community and many cultural events such as Chagstock – the summer music festival, Wonderwords – the annual crafts weekend, and Chagword – the biannual literary festival.
Chagford boasts many boutique hotels, cosy inns and vibrant eateries. Independent shops and galleries can also be found, housed in charming granite buildings. Antique shops, florists, delicatessens, clothing shops, wineries, bakeries and more can be found in the prosperous town. Not to mention all the wonderful cafes, restaurants and pubs situated in the centre.
Whilst the small town is quite dynamic, walking just a couple of miles will land you in rural moorland where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Walkers, cyclists and nature lovers will enjoy exploring the vast National Park with its ancient stone circles, dramatic castles and high tors, alongside the many meandering rivers and picturesque reservoirs. If you’re looking to explore Dartmoor, Chagford makes a great base.
For the budding historians, you’ll be thrilled to know that Chagford has a fascinating history which can be seen from wandering around the town. The St Michael’s Parish Church dates back to the 15th century, whereby the tomb of Mary Whiddon is held, a woman who was shot on her wedding day and is thought to be the inspiration behind RB Blackmoore’s book, Lorna Doone.
If you’d like to explore other towns and cities in West Devon and beyond, Chagford makes a great hub with regular bus routes to Exeter, Okehampton and Newton Abbot, plus it’s conveniently situated close to the A30.
